WHO ARE WE?

The COHSMO-project consists of seven research teams from seven european countries; Austria, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Poland and the United Kingdom.

University of Vienna, Department of Sociology, Austria

The University of Vienna was founded in 1365 and is one of the oldest universities in Europe. With its long history, the university is now one of the largest universities in Europe and also one of the most renowned.

The Department of Sociology covers both research and teaching at the University of Vienna. The department offers a Bachelor’s Programme and a Master’s Programme in sociology.

The Department of Sociology is influenced by the research traditions of the Viennese School, which focused on social problems. Its approach of empirical analysis serves to combine diagnosis of society and sociological theory.

Aalborg University, Department of Sociology and Danish Building Research Institute, Denmark

Aalborg University was founded in 1974 and has branches both in Aalborg, Esbjerg and Copenhagen. The university is mostly known for its work within the field of technology and engineering.

The Department of Sociology at Aalborg University covers both research and teaching, and offers both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in sociology. The department also carries out teaching in most of the educational programmes at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Furthermore, the department’s areas of work comprise a wide range of social science disciplines with a largely interdisciplinary approach. The department’s research is organized in research environments, where the scientists research within several areas.

The Danish Building Research Institute (SBi) is part of Aalborg University in Copenhagen. SBi creates research-based knowledge that improves construction and the built environment. SBi merged with Aalborg University in 2007 in order to create a more extensive centre for knowledge about the built environment and construction.

Harokopio University, Athens, Department of Geography, Greece

Harokopio University had its beginning in 1929 as an educational institution and advanced to the status of university in 1990. The name comes from the national benefactor Panagis Horokopos. The university is located in the centre of Athens close to many interesting and highly important cultural sites such as the Acropolis, Thissio. Panathenaic Stadium, Keramikos and the Benaki Museum.

The Department of Geography encompasses both research and teaching and delivers high-quality education at both bachelor’s and master’s level.

The department has 17 academic staff members with recognition in the academic world and a strong presence in world-wide research. In addition to the development of knowledge, the department places particular emphasis on research. Within the department, a significant number of research projects have been developed in collaboration with universities, institutes and research centres in Greece and abroad.

Polytechnic University of Mialn, Milan, Department of Architecture and Urban Studies, Italy

The Polytechnic University of Milan was founded in 1863 and is both the oldest university in Milan and the largest technical university in Italy. The University id known as the best technical university in Italy and one of the best technical uiversities in the world.

The Polytechnic University of Milan educates engineers, architects and industrial designers, and is focused on quality and innovation both in research and in teaching.

The Department of Architecture and Urban Studies was founded in 2013 and has an interdisciplinary thematic research structure. The department performs research, design experiments and education in the field of architectural and urban design, spatial planning and territorial governance, urban policy, preservation and intervention of the built and natural heritage, historical and critical  interpretation of architecture and the city.

It is one of the most important research structures in Italy in the field of urbanization and regionalization, located in a solid international network of expertise and excellence and open to cooperation with institutional and social actors at local, national and international level.

Vytautas Magnus University, Kaunas, Social research Centre, Lithuania

Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) in Kaunas was founded in 1922 and is one of the leading universities in Lithuania.

VMU is known as a progressive university  with global orientation and a liberal mindset. Furthermore, VMU is known to be very visonary in its approach to organising studies, scientific research and academic community life. Honesty, tolerance and independent thought is at the core of VMU.

The Social Reserch Centre was founded in 2004 as part of Vytautas Magnus University. Most of the researchers at the Centre work at the Department of Sociology at VMU and are involved in many different national and international projects.

The researchers at the Social Research Centre have, during the last century, been conducting academic research in different fields of sociological research such as; social exclusion, sociospatial segregation, citizenship education, health and primary health care and ethnic groups.

University of Warsaw, Departrment of Local Development and Policy, Poland

The University of Warsaw was founded in 1816 with five faculties. Today the university is the largest in Poland and renowned for its research – the University of Warsaw is among the top 3% of best universities in the world.

The University is widely known for its high-quality educational programmes and offers a wide range of courses within the fields of humanity, social sciences and natural sciences . Futhermore, the university is known for its many interdisciplinary courses combining knowledge and skills of many disciplines.

The Department of Local Development and Policy under the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies was established in 1977 and was the first faculty of geography in Poland.

University of the West of England, Bristol, Department of Geography and Environmental Management, United Kingdom

The University of the West of England in Bristol (UWE) is a University Alliance university with a mission to make a difference in its city an region. At UWE the focus is on combining high-quality teaching and research with real world impact and thereby shaping higher education and research policy, which benefits both students, business and civic partners.

UWE offers a wide range of courses across the arts and is especially known for the quality of teaching and the student experience as a whole.

The UWE team is made up of researchers from the Department of Geography and Environmental Management (leading) and The Bristol Centre for Economics and Finance (BCEF). UWE looks to bring together research teams with complementary expertise in tackling the real world research problems with which they engage.

The Department of Geography and Environmental Management and BCEF are especially commended both for its teaching expertise and research success. UWE researchers and academics often work with businesses and institutions and alongside other academics from around the world to solve real life problems.
